Guest Artist – Philip Hammial

Woodford artist and poet Philip Hammial has had thirty-four solo sculpture exhibitions and has participated in over eighty group exhibitions, including two in Paris. He finds his materials in tips, scrap-yards and roadside throw-outs and puts the pieces together with bolts and nuts, screws, nails, wire, string and glue. He has chosen not to learn how to weld.

Hammial has curated twenty-six exhibitions of Australian Outsider Art in five countries, including a six-month long show (175 pieces, twenty-three artists) in the Halle St. Pierre in Paris in 2006-07.

He is also a poet with thirty-one poetry collections published in Australia and one, a new and selected, forthcoming from Sheep Meadow Press in the United States. His work has appeared in twenty-nine poetry anthologies in seven countries and in 127 journals in sixteen countries. He has represented Australia at fourteen international poetry festivals: Durban, S.A. (2); Paris (3); Tokyo; Trois-Rivieres, Canada; Prague (2); Medellin, Colombia; Granada, Nicaragua; Struga, Macedonia & Istanbul. In 2009/10 he was the Australian writer-in-residence for six months at the Cité International des Arts in Paris.
