Guest Artist – Geoff Smith

I owe my love of photography to my father Max.  He was a keen photographer as a young boy back in the late 1930’s/early 1940’s, and encouraged my interest in my childhood years, helping me with both colour transparency and black & white darkroom work.

Now days I work almost exclusively in the digital medium, but my grounding in the unforgiving colour transparencies has taught me to take care to get things right “in camera” rather than relying on post processing.

For more than 40 years I have particularly enjoyed capturing what nature has to offer, responding to the way light falls on landscapes, and seeking to portray this in beautiful images. I love seeing my images printed, framed and hung as wall art.  Over the years the development of my vision has seen me increasingly drawn to the simplicity of monochrome work, with an emphasis on line, tone and texture.

My photographic motto is: It’s not just about the subject, it’s about the light falling on the subject !

I have participated in a number of shared and solo exhibitions at Project Contemporary Art Space in Wollongong and at the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre at Govetts Leap.  I have also exhibited work at local cafes in Blackheath.  I am a member of the Blackheath Art Society and have regularly received commendations at their exhibitions, and was awarded 1st Prize at the Easter 2014 Exhibition.  I was a finalist in the 2011 NSW Parliamentary Plein Air Photography Prize.
